Listening To Our Parents

Dear God,

Sometimes I would wildly think out of the box and ask You questions like -- When is it okay to ignore our parents? From Your Word, I see that Your answer is never. As children (and I mean even as adult children), we have to treat our parents with respect -- not because they deserve it, but because You have asked us to. And because I want to be obedient to You, I therefore want to do Your will...

Growing up and passing through all the summers of teenage life , I haven't always wanted to listen to my parents or obey them, Lord -- just as I don't always want to listen to You. However, I also realized that walking my own way isn't showing respect -- to You or to them.

So I thank You for showing me and for teaching me, Lord... Fill me with the desire to continue to listen to my parents even if I am an adult already, so that I may show an example to my DS and DD. Now that I am a parent myself, I know that we can learn so much from our own parents and benefit from their life experiences. I believe this is Your will, Lord. Thank You for your patience and guidance.

Listen to your father, who gave you life,
and do not despise your mother when she is old.
Proverbs 23:22

  1. Anne, this post is lovely. I have been struggling with this issue in regards to my sister-in-laws and how they treat their parents. No matter what you think they did, God still requires you to respect and honour your parents.

  2. Hi Michelle, when we become parents ourselves, we learn to appreciate and value our parents big time... I pray your sister/s in law will be touched by our Lord to treat their parents well. I also experience what you are experiencing -- wherein my Mom is not treated well by some family members... Sad but we can only pray that one day, their hearts will not be hardened, and love will finally find its way instead...
